The Senate Agriculture Committee will vote Monday on a bill that would allow Kentucky farmers to grow industrial hemp.

A number of high-profile supporters are expected to testify in support of Senate Bill 50.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul and Representatives John Yarmuth and Thomas Massie and former CIA director James Woolsey will testify in front of the committee before a vote is taken.

Supporters believe legalizing the plant could be just the boost that the state’s economy needs.

However, growing hemp is currently banned because it shares the same classification as marijuana.

Those in opposition cite concerns with law enforcement as well as the need for further studies on the issue.
