Brain Scan Study Suggests 'Pothead' Stereotype Might Be Real

Plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Youn, wrote for CNN about the one of possible reasons for the growth of male breast.  This phenomenon is known as gynecomastia, and about 40% of male population deals with it.

Dr. Youn said that when he saw a boy in his early twenties, who had male breast and came to Dr Youn for help. Dr. Youn sensed a strange smell, as he said, the smell of marijuana. Dr. Youn approached the boy and told him to stop smoking pot, since it may stimulate the growth of male breast.

Gynecomastia is caused by an imbalance of hormones in the body. When a man has more estrogen than testosterone in his body, the body responds by starting to grow breast.

Studies in animals have shown that some ingredients that are found in marijuana can result in an imbalance of hormones. The effect of marijuana on human hormones has not been fully tested and its effects are not yet clear.

Lower levels of testosterone were discovered at those who frequently use marijuana, but still there is no study that has been formally proven that marijuana is a trigger of male breast growth. However, many doctors around the world agree that there is a link between marijuana and growth of male breast.

Although this problem usually settles on its own in a few months or years, during 2012, nearly 23,000 men had plastic surgery operation in order to fix this it. It is, in fact, one of the most common procedure performed on men.
